North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has put forward a proposal to establish a new academic hub on its Shillong campus, named the 'Centre for Indo-Thai Collaboration.' This dedicated centre is envisioned to become a focal point for fostering and coordinating academic and research partnerships between NEHU and various universities in Thailand.
The proposed centre intends to cover a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, encouraging collaborative programs, student and faculty exchanges, and joint research endeavors. This initiative was discussed during a recent visit by a Thai delegation, emphasizing the shared interest in strengthening India-Thailand academic ties.
Officials from both NEHU and the Thai ministry of foreign affairs expressed a mutual desire for "meaningful and sustained partnerships." The Thai delegation highlighted the importance of idea exchange, joint research, and student mobility, suggesting formal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) as a framework for cooperation.
Representatives from several Thai universities, including Thammasat University, Prince of Songkla University, and Ubon Ratchathani University, showcased their academic offerings and research areas. Opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration, student and faculty exchanges, and scholarship prospects were explored.
Furthermore, the visiting delegation shared a two-year action plan aimed at establishing Thai Studies Centres in Assam and Meghalaya to ensure the long-term sustainability of academic cooperation between Thailand and India. Potential areas of partnership span science, technology, medicine, traditional medicine, socio-economic studies, and cultural studies.
