Summary
- College offers practical skills training to NEET youth.
- Focus on meeting young people at their engagement level.
- Government offers grants to companies hiring young people.

A college in Lancashire has developed a distinctive approach to engage young people who are not in education, employment, or training (NEETs). Blackburn College's program, based in a refurbished former department store, offers practical skills and tailored support to help these individuals re-engage with education or employment.
Dr. Fazal Dad emphasized the importance of meeting young people at their current level of engagement. Trainee Akeeb Ahmed, who struggled with traditional learning, found success in joinery skills, stating his practical abilities far surpass academic ones. His journey highlights the program's effectiveness in supporting individuals facing personal challenges.
Course manager Katie Tormay noted that the center provides crucial support for young people with difficult home lives or a lack of role models. She stressed that without this support, finding employment would be impossible for many.
Meanwhile, the government is bolstering efforts to tackle youth unemployment. Firms will now receive a £3,000 grant for hiring individuals aged 18 to 24 who are on benefits and have been seeking work for at least six months. Existing schemes for the long-term unemployed are also being expanded.
