In a tragic turn of events on June 21, 2026, 18-year-old Sushil Dhage died by suicide in Hingoli, Maharashtra, following his participation in the NEET-UG re-examination. The medical entrance exam was re-administered due to widespread allegations of a question paper leak concerning the original May 3rd test.
Before his death, Sushil Dhage recorded a heart-wrenching 33-second video addressed to his mother. In the recording, he expressed profound guilt and begged for her forgiveness, stating he was in excruciating pain and could no longer understand anything. He also conveyed his intention to be reborn from her womb in the next life to avoid causing her such suffering.
This unfortunate incident follows a similar case where Akanksha Chaturvedi, another 18-year-old NEET candidate, died by suicide in Nagpur on May 20, 2026. She had left a note apologizing to her parents, citing a lack of courage to retake the exam amidst the national paper leak controversy.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is actively investigating the NEET paper leak, having reportedly apprehended the suspected mastermind, a chemistry lecturer from Pune. Millions of students annually vie for approximately one lakh undergraduate medical seats through the highly competitive NEET exam in India.
