NEET Exam May Shift to Two Stages Like JEE
5 Aug
Summary
- Government considers a two-stage NEET exam, similar to JEE.
- NEET (UG) is the last major NTA exam in pen-and-paper format.
- A task force led by Nandan Nilekani is reviewing exam reforms.

The Central government has informed the Supreme Court that it is actively considering major reforms for the NEET (UG) examination. Among the possibilities being examined is a transition from the current single-stage, pen-and-paper format to a two-stage examination pattern, similar to the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for engineering courses.
This potential overhaul is part of a comprehensive review of the National Testing Agency (NTA) framework aimed at preventing future question paper leaks. NEET (UG) currently stands as the sole major examination conducted by the NTA that still uses the traditional pen-and-paper method, with other major exams like JEE (Main) and CUET having migrated to computer-based testing.
The government stated that the final decision on the examination's structure will be informed by the recommendations of a recently constituted High-Powered Task Force. This task force, headed by Nandan Nilekani, comprises experts from various fields to ensure a thorough examination of the technological, security, and pedagogical aspects of any proposed transition.
Any structural changes to the NEET (UG) exam will also require consultation and concurrence with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Medical Commission, given their roles in the examination process. The Centre has committed to providing candidates with ample advance notice regarding any changes to ensure a smooth and equitable transition.
