A mother and son, Jigisha Tailor and Aditya Kapadia, achieved a unique milestone by graduating together from IIT Madras's online Data Science programme. Jigisha, 45, had previously worked as an electronics teacher for 16 years before leaving her job in 2019. Encouraged by her son, she enrolled in the programme in 2022.
Aditya, 21, joined the course in 2021 during the Covid pandemic, driven by his fascination with data science and artificial intelligence. He explained that even a traditional degree would likely have been online. Jigisha dedicated herself to her studies, waking at 4:30 am daily to balance household duties.
The duo experienced a friendly rivalry during their studies, often competing for top grades. Their graduation ceremony became a particularly special occasion when a classmate helped arrange for them to receive their degrees on the same stage, creating a memorable moment celebrating family and academic achievement.
