- High-earning states generally outperform lower-earning states in education.

A recent study by WalletHub has identified Massachusetts as the most educated state in the United States, with West Virginia ranking last. The comprehensive analysis evaluated all 50 states based on 18 distinct metrics, focusing on both educational attainment and the quality of education provided.
The study revealed a consistent trend: states with higher median household incomes tend to perform better in education. This is largely attributed to factors such as property taxes that contribute to better funding for local public schools. Educational attainment was measured by the percentage of adults holding degrees from high school diplomas to graduate levels.
Quality of education was assessed through various indicators, including standardized test scores, graduation rates, enrollment in top universities, and the availability of free school programs. The study also considered racial and gender disparities in educational achievement, highlighting differences in degree attainment across demographic groups. Massachusetts leads with over 47% of adults holding at least a bachelor's degree and an additional 22% with graduate degrees.
