Summary
- MMA lessons are improving behavior and grades at a Birmingham SEN school.
- The sport teaches respect and self-discipline to students at risk of disengagement.
- Students report increased self-worth, emotional regulation, and confidence.

Lindsworth School in Birmingham is implementing mixed martial arts (MMA) classes, which staff claim have dramatically improved students' conduct and academic results. Many of the young individuals attending the school have previously been excluded from mainstream education and were at risk of disengaging from society.
Despite MMA's association with violence, educators at Lindsworth School are using the discipline to impart valuable lessons in respect and self-control. Aimran Majid, who leads the sessions, emphasizes that martial arts offer far more than just physical combat, focusing on developing students as individuals.
Students have reported positive outcomes, with one Year 10 pupil, Malakye, noting that the lessons have significantly aided his emotional regulation. Another student, Nathaniel, a Year 9 pupil, has advanced two academic classes since attending Lindsworth, attributing his progress to the school's support and the MMA program.
Assistant head teacher Courtney Ballard highlighted that the program has boosted students' self-worth, transforming their self-perception into that of confident, capable individuals. This newfound self-assurance is now reflected in their schoolwork. The school currently offers two weekly sessions and is exploring possibilities to extend the program's reach.
