Born into a prominent Chettinad family, Muthiah's early life was shaped in Burma before her family relocated to India in 1944. After completing her education and marrying industrialist M. A. M. Muthiah Chettiar, she embarked on her mission to establish educational institutions.
Motivated by a desire to nurture young minds, she founded Chettinad Vidyashram, which grew alongside Rani Meyyammai Girls Higher Secondary School and Kumararani Dr. Meena Muthiah College of Arts and Science. Muthiah also held a doctorate in Tanjore painting and actively supported classical arts through Chettinad Kalaikoodam.
Her philanthropic endeavors included substantial support for organizations like Voluntary Health Services and Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital. She also established the Kumara Rani Meena Muthiah Mother and Child Hospital in Karaikudi, further cementing her commitment to community welfare.
