7 May
Summary
- Students must sign undertakings for alternative elective choices.
- Minimum 30 students needed per elective combination, per university.
- Journalism, English, Hindi majors may struggle to meet minimums.

University College, Hampankatta, has introduced a mandatory undertaking for students seeking admission to its Bachelor of Arts (BA) program for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year. This new requirement mandates that applicants agree to switch to an alternative subject combination if their initial choice fails to attract the minimum enrollment threshold.
Mangaluru University has stipulated that elective combinations will only be offered if at least 30 students opt for them. Consequently, if a chosen combination falls short of this number, the college may discontinue it, reassigning students to available electives. This directive has caused significant anxiety among prospective students, who fear their chosen fields of study might not be available.
College principal Ganapathi Gowda stated that the undertaking was implemented based on university directives to discontinue courses with low enrollment. He expressed hope that adequate admissions would be secured for all subject combinations before the academic year begins. Meanwhile, the department of collegiate education has countered that a minimum of 15 students should suffice to commence a course, creating a point of contention.
