- Program aims to combat summer learning loss and recruit future nurses.
- Students explore diverse nursing roles, including anesthesia.

Middle school students in Manchester recently engaged in hands-on activities designed to spark interest in healthcare professions. The program, a collaboration between Manchester schools and Elliot Health System, provided practical training in areas such as dressing injuries and taking vital signs. This initiative sought to combat the "summer slump" in learning while also serving as a recruitment tool for the medical field.
Led by registered nurses, the sessions introduced students to different nursing specialties and the responsibilities involved. Nurses demonstrated medical device usage and wound care techniques on mannequins. The program also highlighted career paths, with some students, like 13-year-old Jayden Pierre, expressing aspirations to become anesthesiologists, discovering that specialized nursing roles exist in this area.
The 21st Century Program, which offers federally funded activities for elementary and middle schoolers, aims to equip students with new skills. Families can enroll in this free program, which also includes meals and field trips, with before- and after-school sessions resuming in September.
