Maharashtra PG Medical Seats Open to All India
20 Oct
Summary
- 35% of private PG medical seats now open nationally.
- Centralized counselling replaces offline college admissions.
- Students and parents plan to seek review of new rules.
New regulations announced by the Maharashtra State CET Cell for the 2026-27 academic year will open approximately 35% of postgraduate medical seats in private and minority colleges to candidates across India and abroad. These institutional quota seats, previously offering an advantage to Maharashtra-domiciled students, will now be filled through a centralized online counselling process.
This centralized system, managed entirely by the Maharashtra CET Cell, will also encompass management and NRI quotas, ending offline admissions at individual college campuses. The change has sparked considerable discontent among aspiring students and their parents, who argue it disadvantages local candidates. Protests and plans to meet with the medical education minister are underway, with discussions of potential legal challenges if the decision is not reviewed.
CET officials cited court orders as the basis for opening the institutional quota seats to non-domiciled candidates, noting that external students were admitted under similar circumstances last year. The cell has also established a task force to monitor social media for misinformation regarding entrance exams and admission processes.
