The committee, led by former Maharashtra chief secretary Jayant Kumar Banthia, includes esteemed medical professionals and administrators. Its mandate is to assess current structures and recommend changes to strengthen academic quality, research capabilities, and healthcare delivery.
Key responsibilities include suggesting financial and administrative reforms, defining governing board powers, and proposing faculty and staff service rules. The panel will review successful autonomy models from India and abroad.
This move is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of these government medical colleges, enabling them to compete with leading national institutions in education, research, and patient care. The committee has been given three months to submit its comprehensive report.
