- Two private health science universities approved by state cabinet.
- Admissions will be managed through the state's CET cell.
- Universities will not receive government financial aid or scholarships.
The Maharashtra state cabinet has officially approved the establishment of two new private health science universities. These institutions, formerly known as NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr Vithalrao Vikhe Patil Foundation's Medical College, will be renamed Lata Mangeshkar University and Dr Balasaheb Vikhe Patil University, respectively. Both are located in Ahilyanagar.
Admissions to these universities will be processed through the state's Common Entrance Test (CET) cell. However, specific details regarding any changes in the fee structure are still pending. These private universities will not be eligible for any financial assistance from the government, nor will their students be entitled to government scholarships.
The proposals were meticulously reviewed by a committee, adhering to the guidelines set by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Following positive recommendations, the cabinet gave its final approval. Lata Mangeshkar University will provide undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty courses in medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, and nursing, complemented by a 1,138-bed hospital. Dr Balasaheb Vikhe Patil University will offer similar advanced courses in medicine, supported by an 830-bed hospital.
The private university status for these institutions will officially commence once the relevant act's schedule is amended. Officials have stressed the importance of clearly communicating fee structures to students and parents before admission decisions are made, urging adherence to CET cell deadlines for the upcoming academic year.
