11 Aug
Summary
- London has most primary kids unable to swim 25m.
- Only 63% of London's Year 6 pupils swim proficiently.
- East London boroughs show lowest swimming abilities.

London faces a significant challenge as it reports the highest proportion of primary school children in England who cannot swim 25 meters upon leaving primary school. Data from 2024-2025 indicates that only 63% of Year 6 pupils in the capital achieved this benchmark, falling short of the national average of 72% for England.
Furthermore, London also recorded the lowest percentage of children capable of performing various swimming strokes and demonstrating self-rescue techniques. This statistic is particularly concerning given that all state schools are mandated to provide swimming instruction during Key Stage 1 or 2.
Specific areas within London, including Newham, Tower Hamlets, and Redbridge, exhibited the lowest swimming proficiency rates among Year 6 pupils. In these boroughs, the percentage of children able to swim 25m confidently ranged from 43% to 48%. Water safety education, including essential survival skills, is being emphasized as crucial, especially in light of recent drowning incidents in London's waterways.
In contrast, regions like the South West and North West of England reported higher swimming abilities among their Year 6 pupils, with 77% and 75% respectively able to swim 25m.
