- Event aims to teach students about the importance of the local watershed

On October 3rd, the Friends of Scioto Brush Creek (FoSBC) continued their 23-year tradition of hosting the Annual Scioto Brush Creek Day. This year, the event welcomed over 80 excited sixth-grade students and their teachers from Northwest Middle School to the Otway Covered Bridge Park.
Throughout the day, the students immersed themselves in a variety of hands-on learning experiences focused on the local Scioto Brush Creek. Knowledgeable volunteers guided the students through activities such as fish ecology and electro-shocking demonstrations, stream quality monitoring and macroinvertebrate identification, and a stream table model showcasing hydrology and stream patterns.
The event aims to teach the students, who live in the watershed, about the amazing natural resource that is Scioto Brush Creek and how human activity can impact it. "It is always so rewarding to see the smiles, hear the giggles of children experiencing the joys of the stream firsthand," said FoSBC President Jody Mcallister.
The organization's core mission is watershed education, and the Scioto Brush Creek Day is designed to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. By the end of the day, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the local creek and the importance of making wise choices to protect it.
