Summary
- Visalia is identified as the least educated city nationwide.
- Six of the ten least educated cities are located in California.
- San Jose ranks as the third most educated city in the country.

A recent study has identified Visalia, California, as the least educated city in the United States. This places Visalia at the bottom of a ranking of 150 populated cities, with Bakersfield, Modesto, Salinas, Fresno, and Stockton also appearing among the ten least educated urban centers. Notably, six of these cities are located within California.
The analysis considered several metrics, including the percentage of adults aged 25 and older with a bachelor's degree, the quality of public schools, and the gender education gap. Bakersfield and Visalia specifically showed low percentages of residents with high school diplomas and college experience.
Conversely, the San Jose metropolitan area achieved the third-highest education ranking nationally. Over half of its residents aged 25 and older hold a bachelor's degree, and the region also excels in university quality. This contrasts sharply with the state's lowest-ranked cities, highlighting a significant educational divide within California.
