For the first time in 10 years, La Loche's Dene High School will be open on the anniversary of the deadly 2016 shooting. This year, a community ceremony will be held at the school to honor the four victims and seven injured. The school division, in consultation with former Columbine High School principal Frank DeAngelis, planned the event to focus on remembrance, healing, and hope.
The day's events will include mass, a moment of silence, a celebration of life, and presentations. The community has implemented a long-term wellness strategy using the motto "Dene Strong" and has renovated the school, including adding a wellness room. Future plans include developing a monument or commemorative park, with input from the victims' families.
