Kolkata Schools on High Alert After Alarming Snakebites

Two snakebite incidents on school campuses within the past week have sparked significant concern among educational institutions in Kolkata. The alarming events have led schools, particularly those in older structures, to implement new safety measures and student awareness programs.

The scare began when a class 3 student was bitten at a private school, later confirmed to be a non-venomous snake. However, anxiety escalated on Monday after a class 1 student at Bhawanipur Mitra Institution was bitten by a venomous Russell's Viper. The child is currently in intensive care, having received numerous anti-venom injections.

In response, Jadavpur Vidyapith has issued a Standard Operating Procedure, advising students to avoid isolated areas and inspect seating before use. The school is also focusing on pest control to eliminate rat populations that attract snakes. Other institutions are intensifying daily inspections, securing premises, and using specialized sprays to maintain snake-free environments.

Wildlife experts emphasize a rational approach, noting that venomous snake encounters are less common in city centers. They advocate for awareness discussions with field experts and the forest department to educate staff and students on handling snakebite situations effectively.
