Kolhapur ZP chief executive officer Karthikeyan S spearheaded the 'pink room' initiative to normalize conversations around menstrual health for adolescent girls. These dedicated spaces are designed to offer privacy, care, and dignity within schools for girls aged 8 to 18 experiencing menstrual discomfort, health concerns, or emotional distress.
The project was officially announced on November 1, 2025, and by December 2025, it was fully implemented across 770 ZP schools. Each 'pink room' is equipped with essential facilities, including a bed, sanitary pad vending and disposal units, clean drinking water, and regular cleaning.
Since the initiative's launch, there has been a noticeable improvement in school attendance during menstrual days. Girls report feeling more confident and supported, knowing that these facilities are available. The project's success underscores a commitment to ensuring girls' education and well-being.
Community participation and various funding sources supported this effort. Kolhapur's model is setting a precedent for other districts, demonstrating a proactive approach to adolescent girls' health, dignity, and educational continuity.
