Gen Z Builds Hope: A Family for Every Child

A novel initiative in Thenhipalam, Malappuram, is redefining care for abandoned children by establishing a family-like environment within a group foster-care home. Rise Up Home (RUH), a creation of the Gen Z-led Rise Up Forum (RUF), provides eight children with the stability and affection of a family, moving beyond traditional institutional settings.

The RUF, formed initially to aid flood victims in 2018, now comprises over 1,000 members. Their evolved vision led to RUH, a home recognized by the state government. This unique model integrates children, elderly caregivers like Santhakumari, and young volunteers who pursue their own studies and careers while dedicating themselves to the home's upkeep and the children's well-being.

This pioneering home, the first group foster-care model in Kerala, emphasizes personalized care, including education and healthcare, within a nurturing family setting. The caregivers report significant positive changes in the children, including overcoming learning gaps and emotional struggles. Officials have also noted improvements, particularly in children with conditions like ADHD, affirming that RUH functions more as a home than an institution.

The success of the Thenhipalam RUH has inspired the opening of a second facility in Feroke, Kozhikode, accommodating six more children. The RUF plans to replicate this model, believing that children should grow up as integral parts of families and communities, not in isolation.
