Summary
- Maharawal of Jaisalmer calls out NCERT for historical error
- Textbook incorrectly depicts Jaisalmer as part of Maratha Empire
- NCERT forms expert committee to review and address the issue

On August 5, 2025, Chaitanya Raj Singh, the Maharawal of Jaisalmer, took to social media to call out the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for a historical inaccuracy in a Class 8 textbook. The textbook incorrectly depicts Jaisalmer as part of the Maratha Empire, which Singh says is "unverified and historically unsubstantiated information" that "hurts our glorious history and public sentiments."
In response to Singh's concerns, NCERT has issued a statement saying that they have a standard process of forming a committee whenever significant feedback is received about textbook content. This committee, which will be composed of domain experts from reputed institutions, will "carefully deliberate on the matter, make evidence-based decisions, and recommend appropriate actions accordingly at the earliest."
Chaitanya Raj Singh Bhati, the 44th Maharawal of Jaisalmer, belongs to the lineage of the Bhati Rajput dynasty, which ruled Jaisalmer for centuries. He is actively involved in promoting sustainable development, heritage restoration, education, and water conservation in the Jaisalmer region.
