India's Oldest Journalist, 94, Still Editing Daily

Lalbiakthanga Pachuau, aged 94, continues to edit his Mizo daily newspaper, Zoram Tlangau, from his residence in Aizawl, earning him the title of India's oldest working journalist. In 2024, he was bestowed with the Padma Shri award for his profound contributions to journalism and literature.

Born in 1927, Pachuau's early life included service in the British Indian Army during World War II, where he fought in Burma. This military background instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and duty, qualities that significantly shaped his journalistic career.

After his military service, Pachuau began contributing to Mizo newspapers before founding Zoram Tlangau in 1970. He consciously chose to publish in Mizo, believing it fosters a deeper connection with readers and more accurately reflects local community concerns.

Pachuau's commitment to journalism extends beyond mere reporting; he has been actively involved in social initiatives, including the establishment of the Association for Voluntary Blood Donation and campaigns against substance abuse. He also played a role in the peace process with the Mizo National Front in the 1980s.

Officially recognized in 2016, Pachuau's active engagement with current affairs, extensive reading, and daily newspaper editing underscore his enduring dedication.
