India's MBBS Seats Surge by 9,911 for 2026-27

This significant addition builds upon previous growth, as MBBS seats rose from 1,09,115 in the 2023-24 academic year to 1,28,976 by 2025-26.
Accompanying this surge in undergraduate medical education, the number of postgraduate (PG) medical seats has also seen a dramatic rise, increasing from 31,185 to 86,360 during the same period. These developments contribute to improving India's healthcare workforce. The nation's doctor-population ratio is now estimated at 1:778, considering both allopathic and AYUSH practitioners.
The Indian Medical Register shows a total of 15,35,155 registered allopathic doctors and an additional 7,51,768 AYUSH practitioners, bringing the total to over 2.2 million registered medical professionals. This figure, assuming 80% availability, underpins the calculated doctor-population ratio.
