Summary
- New inclusive playground features equipment for students of all abilities.
- The playground aims to provide access and a sense of belonging for every child.
- Funding of $1.9 million from major maintenance was used for the new equipment.

Bowman Elementary School recently celebrated the opening of its new inclusive playground, a space specifically designed to accommodate students of all abilities. This initiative, a second for the Anchorage School District, ensures that children who struggle with traditional playground equipment can now play alongside their peers.
The playground boasts features like a unity spinner, accessible equipment for wheelchair users, and a sensory board. It also includes a separate area for younger children and noise-reducing egg-shaped seats for observation. This development was made possible by $1.9 million in major maintenance funding, according to district officials.
Principal Lena Brower emphasized that the playground represents access and a "home for people, no matter what they can or can't do." The new, softer rubber safety tiles replace former problematic surfaces. This inclusive design aims to enhance communication, cooperation, and community among students, making school a more welcoming environment for everyone, especially those in special needs classrooms.
