IITs Merge Engineering with Medicine: A New Era
1 Sep
Summary
- IITs are now offering postgraduate medical degrees.
- Modern healthcare relies heavily on engineering and technology.
- IISc and IITs are integrating research and clinical practice.

IIT Kharagpur applied to the National Medical Commission in March 2026 for postgraduate medical degrees, marking a significant shift for the 75-year-old institution. IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras have also announced plans to expand their medical programs, including offering MBBS and Ph.D. degrees. This convergence highlights how modern healthcare increasingly relies on engineering advancements such as AI, robotic surgery, and biocompatible materials.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, through its Tata IISc Medical School, is also establishing a new hospital and an integrated MD-Ph.D. program. This approach emphasizes research and co-innovation with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. The integration of engineering and medicine on these campuses is expected to drive the invention of indigenous medical devices and diagnostics.
While private universities have long experimented with interdisciplinary approaches, public institutions like IITs and IISc are now embracing this model. They face challenges including faculty recruitment, operational risks of running hospitals, and navigating multiple regulatory bodies. However, partnerships and integrated campus models are seen as pathways to training physician-scientists and advancing healthcare innovation in India.
