16 Aug
Summary
- IIT Madras launched an exclusive gym for female students.
- A musical fountain with a light show aims to reduce student anxiety.
- A new outdoor space supports collaborative, non-classroom learning.

IIT Madras recently inaugurated a suite of new facilities aimed at boosting student wellness and fostering a more inclusive campus environment. The initiatives, launched on Saturday, include an exclusive gymnasium for female students, a musical fountain, and a dedicated space for outside-classroom activities.
The new female-exclusive gym addresses a long-standing need, as existing access times often conflicted with academic schedules for the institute's significant female student population, which comprises about 30% of its 10,000 students.
A musical fountain, now a feature at the Gajendra Circle landmark, will present a daily light and music show. This addition is intended to provide a relaxing ambiance, scientifically shown to lower cortisol levels and reduce anxiety, offering a respite from demanding academic routines.
Furthermore, Nalanda Square has been designated as an open-air venue for interactive learning and life-skill development. This space encourages teamwork through outbound training and allows faculty to conduct classes in an outdoor setting, promoting holistic development beyond traditional academics.
