IIT Kharagpur has initiated the formal process to introduce a Doctor of Medicine (MD) postgraduate program, seeking approval from the National Medical Council. Institute director Suman Chakraborty confirmed the application was filed by the March 31 deadline. This move, if greenlit by the Centre, would mark the first instance of an Indian Institute of Technology offering a postgraduate medical course. The proposed program plans to accommodate 20 students initially. The Ministry of Education has expressed support, but the final decision rests with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Twenty doctors have already been appointed to faculty positions for the MD program. Students enrolled in the course will receive training at the healthcare facilities of Dr. B.C. Roy Multi-Speciality Medical Research Centre and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Super Speciality Hospital. Admissions will be managed through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Furthermore, Syama Prasad hospital is slated for expansion into a 220-bed IPD hospital, enhancing healthcare services for the institute's community and the general public.
