IIT-Bombay Students Protest Death, Demand Action

A significant standoff at IIT-Bombay has reached a new stage, with the administration agreeing to review an 18-point charter presented by protesting students. Director Professor Shireesh Kedare committed to considering the students' demands after extensive discussions near the campus gate. This breakthrough occurred in the wake of the tragic suicide of 20-year-old student Sahil Wakode on September 18. Students are demanding a thorough, independent investigation into Wakode's death and appropriate action concerning Professor Suryanarayana Doolla, who was supervising the examination Wakode was taking.

The student charter also emphasizes the urgent need for improved mental-health support systems. Key proposals include establishing a 24-hour psychiatrist-on-call facility and creating a clear implementation plan for mental health services. Furthermore, students are seeking assurances that no punitive actions will be taken against them for organizing and participating in the peaceful protest. The Mumbai Crime Branch has registered a First Information Report (FIR) and is actively investigating the circumstances of Wakode's suicide, following a complaint filed by his parents.
