7 Oct
Summary
- IIT-B holds emergency Senate meeting on exam cheating rules.
- Move follows a student's suicide after alleged cheating incident.
- Institute is also implementing welfare and safety measures.
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has scheduled an emergency Senate meeting to deliberate on new regulations for handling cases of academic dishonesty in examinations. This initiative comes after the tragic suicide of a second-year student on September 18, reportedly after being caught cheating during a mid-semester exam.
The incident galvanized student protests and prompted an urgent review of IIT-B's existing measures for dealing with examination misconduct. A draft of the proposed new rules is set to be presented to the Senate for discussion and approval before final implementation.
Beyond policy revisions, IIT-B is actively pursuing various student welfare enhancements. These include a phased rollout of an improved student wellness support structure, increased student participation in committees, and a flexible mess system. Safety measures, such as potential fan replacements and improved hostel play areas, are also under consideration.
Furthermore, the end-of-semester examination schedule is being re-evaluated, and departmental-level support for student well-being is being strengthened. The institute has also established the new position of associate dean of student wellness to bolster support services.
