Huber Heights Schools Add Time for Extended Learning

Huber Heights students commenced the new school year with significantly altered daily schedules, featuring extended instructional hours across all grade levels. This change, implemented under the new Superintendent Russ Fussnecker, addresses the impact of severe winter weather experienced in February 2026.

The extensive snowstorms in February 2026 caused numerous class cancellations, pushing Weisenborn Junior High below the state's minimum requirement of 1,001 instructional hours. The added daily time aims to build a necessary buffer into the academic calendar.

Elementary schools in Huber Heights have added 30 minutes to their daily schedules. Weisenborn Junior High students will now attend for an additional 40 minutes daily, while Wayne High School students will experience the most substantial change with an extra 50 minutes of instruction each day.

Superintendent Fussnecker emphasized that these seemingly minor daily increases accumulate substantially over time. He noted that this adjustment allows the district to maintain a full three-month summer break, with students returning after Labor Day, a practice he referred to as "old school."

Other nearby school districts, such as Vandalia-Butler and Mad River, have previously implemented similar extended daily schedules. Fussnecker expressed enthusiasm for the district's strong community ties and the evident pride among its 5,200 students.
