Beginning with the 2026-27 academic session, Haryana is implementing a strict six-year age requirement for Class 1 admissions. This decision, in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and the Punjab and Haryana High Court's directives, formally concludes all previous age relaxations. The Haryana government is amending the Right to Education Rules, 2011, which previously allowed children between five and six years old to enroll in Class 1. The High Court had criticized the state for inconsistencies between policy and practice. To manage the transition, children below the new age cut-off will attend Balvatika or pre-primary classes.
This shift necessitates advance planning from parents. Schools in Gurgaon, like DPS Gurgaon and Manav Rachna International School, already have structured admission processes with high demand for entry-level seats. While these schools follow specific calendars and seat capacities, the new age rule ensures a standardized entry age across Haryana.
