An interactive awareness program on waste management and thermocol recycling was recently conducted at Vivekananda Vidyapith ME School in Lalganesh, Guwahati. The event, titled "Waste Wise, Future Wise: Sustainable Waste Management and Thermocol Recycling," saw the participation of 78 students, aged between 10 and 15 years.
The program aimed to educate young minds on the critical issues surrounding waste disposal, with a particular focus on thermocol. Environmentalist Moharana Choudhury highlighted the detrimental effects of improper thermocol disposal and stressed the importance of adopting the 3R circular economy principles: reduce, reuse, and recycle. This initiative is crucial for building environmentally responsible habits from a young age.
Further insights into environmental conservation were provided by Niraj Kashyap, an assistant engineer with the Pollution Control Board of Assam. Kashyap detailed the environmental impact of thermocol waste, the dangers associated with burning plastic, and recommended proper disposal methods. Madhab Das, the Cluster Resource Centre coordinator, also emphasized the role of environmental education in cultivating a sustainable society. A lively quiz, "Think Green, Act Green," tested the students' understanding of ecological concepts, with several students receiving prizes for their knowledge.
