Goa's First Biodiversity Map for Kids Unveiled
12 Feb
Summary
- First-ever biodiversity and cultural map of Goa created for school children.
- Features 48 common species, blending wildlife with local art and traditions.
- Aims to educate students by connecting map species to their real-life environment.
WWF India has developed the state of Goa's inaugural biodiversity and cultural features map, designed specifically for school children. This initiative aims to provide a visual and educational experience, highlighting 48 commonly found species across Goa, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects. The map also integrates significant cultural aspects of Goa, such as Kaavi art and traditional practices like crocodile worship.
The map's creation stems from WWF's work with schools and teacher training programs aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP). The objective is to introduce students to environmental vocations and foster a deeper connection with local biodiversity. Rather than obscure species, the map focuses on those readily observable by children, facilitating hands-on learning and conversation.
This child-friendly resource, featuring artwork by Sudarshan Shaw, will be distributed freely to schools in both print and digital formats. Its release at the Goa Art and Literature Festival by Stephen Alter marks a significant step in enhancing environmental education for young learners, making biodiversity and cultural heritage accessible and engaging.
