Goa Primary Schools See Record Drop in Enrollment
27 Sep
Summary
- Nearly 2,000 fewer students enrolled in Goa's government primary schools this academic year.
- Enrollment in government primary schools has declined year-on-year since 2016-17.
- Central government noted government schools have low student enrollment despite being numerous.
The current academic year in Goa has witnessed an unprecedented drop in government primary school enrollment, with nearly 2,000 fewer students compared to the previous year. Data from the state education department reveals a significant decrease from 17,027 students in 2025-26 to 15,163 in 2026-27.
Officials attribute part of this decline to the strict implementation of the National Education Policy's six-year age cut-off for Class I admissions. However, the downward trend in government primary school enrollment has been consistent since 2016-17, with recent years showing notable decreases.
Central government officials previously highlighted that while government schools constitute over half of Goa's educational institutions, they enroll merely 13.7% of the total student population. This situation has led to a request for a detailed analysis and corrective actions to rebuild confidence in government schools.
Further analysis by the Union education ministry indicated that a significant number of government primary schools, approximately 67%, have fewer than 30 students, and 210 have fewer than 15. This underscores concerns about the optimal utilization of government educational infrastructure in the state.
