9 Feb
Summary
- FTII awarded patent for innovative dual-purpose auditorium.
- System synchronizes cinema projection and stage performance.
- Electromechanical design shifts screen in 8-10 seconds.

The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining its first patent. The innovation is a novel auditorium system designed to dual-purpose, capable of hosting both cinema projections and live stage performances. This groundbreaking technology aims to resolve persistent technical issues related to sound and screen positioning.
The patent, granted by the Indian government's Patent Office on January 16, 2025, is valid for 20 years. Developed by Assistant Professor Ranjit Sadakale and his student team, the system utilizes a synchronized electromechanical setup. This mechanism allows the cinema screen and front speakers to retract or extend, transforming the space for different uses in mere seconds.
This innovation was formally unveiled on January 11, 2025, by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The system's adaptability ensures that an auditorium can function effectively for both film viewing and drama, overcoming previous acoustic and spatial limitations. It represents a multidisciplinary engineering achievement.
The technology addresses the fundamental differences between cinema and drama theatres. While audiences have similar needs, stages differ. Cinema requires screens and speakers at the stage's edge, whereas drama demands an open stage. Sadakale's solution cleverly bridges this gap, enabling seamless transitions between functions without compromising auditory quality.
