Summary
- Free backpacks with supplies distributed on July 31.
- Health screenings and immunizations offered to children.
- Event supports families facing rising costs of essentials.

Anchorage School District is hosting a significant back-to-school event for families on Friday, July 31. This initiative provides free backpacks filled with essential school supplies such as pencils and paper to students at Begich Middle School. The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is supported by community donations. Last year, over 3,500 backpacks were distributed.
In addition to school supplies, families can take advantage of free health services for their children. This includes hearing and vision screenings, as well as updated immunizations. The district is running four buses to transport attendees from various neighborhoods, making the event accessible. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the backpack distribution event.
The district spokesperson highlighted that events like this are crucial for easing the financial strain on families, particularly with the current economic climate affecting everyday essentials. Over a thousand families had pre-registered, but walk-ins are still welcome. A separate event on Saturday, August 1, will offer free school clothes.
The Clothesline Project, now in its 12th year, will provide free school clothing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Clark Middle School. Donations for both events are being accepted at various locations throughout Anchorage.
