Mississippi confronts a substantial deficit in its tech workforce, reporting 1,200 annual unfilled computing positions against a limited pool of fewer than 200 graduates. Addressing this disparity, the Base Camp Coding Academy in Water Valley provides a comprehensive, free 11-month training program designed to cultivate software engineers.
The academy welcomes both recent high school graduates and adults pursuing career changes. Students immerse themselves in real-world technologies, mastering nine coding languages and frameworks, alongside information technology and artificial intelligence. The curriculum extends beyond technical skills, encompassing resume workshops, mock interviews, and professional development to ensure graduates are job-ready.
Funded by Sustaining Sponsors, Base Camp Coding Academy covers all tuition, daily lunches, gas cards, and necessary technology, removing financial barriers for its students. Participants must commit to a rigorous weekday schedule. The program also partners with Northwest Community College, allowing students to earn up to 45 credit hours, bringing them closer to an associate's degree.
Applications for the upcoming year are open until the end of February, requiring a nomination from a teacher or employer. Base Camp Coding Academy aims to demystify software development and offers a pathway for dedicated individuals to secure high-demand tech careers.
