The CREATE Regional Workforce Center in Oxford is set to launch its ninth cohort of free evening commercial construction classes for adults at the end of June. This 12-week program, fully funded by an Alabama Construction Industry Craft Training Board grant, aims to equip individuals with skills for high-wage, high-demand careers.
Participants can choose specialized tracks in carpentry, electrical, welding, or HVAC. Classes require a commitment of two evenings per week for three and a half hours each. Upon completion, students will earn a National Center for Construction Education and Research certification and have the opportunity to become OSHA 10 certified.
This initiative directly addresses the shortage of skilled workers in various sectors by connecting students with regional employers. Instructors are local industry professionals, and participating contractors have expressed support, offering graduates direct hiring opportunities. The program has rapidly grown since its February 2024 inception, moving from a high school lunchroom to its dedicated facility and serving over 1,000 adults.
Unlike daytime programs with geographic limitations, the adult evening classes are open to anyone 18 or older regardless of location, provided they have a genuine interest. The program aims to improve the quality of life for families by offering better career opportunities in east Alabama. Interested individuals can apply online, with applications reviewed by program administrator Dana Webb. Classes are scheduled to begin on June 16.
