Deepanshu Shokeen has achieved a historic milestone by securing the vice-president position in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections as an Independent candidate. He emerged victorious by a considerable margin, marking a significant first for an independent contender in the union's history.
Shokeen expressed that he had anticipated this outcome, citing the broad support he garnered from students across numerous colleges. He highlighted that his backing came from a diverse student base, encompassing politically active individuals, neutral students, and those not typically involved in student politics.
Hailing from Peeragarhi, Shokeen's parents work as a bus conductor and an Anganwadi worker, respectively. Despite his father's desire for him to pursue civil services, Shokeen was drawn to student politics from his time at Bhagat Singh College. He notably took a stand on the PG accommodation collapse in Satya Niketan, vowing not to wear slippers until justice was served.
Shokeen initially sought a nomination from the National Students' Union of India. After being asked to withdraw his organizational-backed nomination, he chose to contest independently, ultimately achieving this landmark victory.
