International Women's Day was recently celebrated in Dharavi with empowering workshops for adolescent girls across seven local schools. Over 1,500 students have engaged in sessions designed to enhance personal safety, health awareness, and self-confidence. These initiatives are part of a broader community engagement effort by Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL), which is executing the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.
The self-defense training, conducted by martial arts trainer Dr. Cheetah Yajnesh Shetty, equips girls with practical techniques to respond to unsafe situations. The training emphasizes situational awareness and quick decision-making, alongside physical defensive moves.
Concurrently, counselors from the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) are leading health awareness sessions. These cover crucial topics such as menstrual hygiene, puberty, and understanding 'good touch' versus 'bad touch,' encouraging girls to speak up about their health and personal boundaries in a safe environment.
Students have found the workshops highly beneficial, reporting increased confidence and knowledge in self-defense and health practices. FPAI counselor Dr. Tejasvi Hindalekar noted that such programs are essential for creating safe spaces for girls to ask questions and seek help.
