Delhi Govt Eyes Single-Shift Schools
2 Jan
Summary
- Delhi plans phased conversion of double-shift schools to single-shift.
- 10 new schools to be built annually, adding 50 by 2029.
- Single-shift schools show higher academic performance and confidence.

The Delhi government is considering a significant shift in its educational infrastructure, moving towards a single-shift system for all its schools. This phased conversion aims to enhance the quality of education and student learning experiences. Currently, 284 of Delhi's 799 school buildings operate on a double-shift basis, with morning and evening sessions.
To facilitate this transition, the directorate of education is planning a substantial infrastructure expansion, including the construction of approximately 10 new schools each year, projecting an addition of around 50 schools by 2029. This expansion will utilize identified vacant plots and existing school campuses, addressing space constraints and potential overcrowding.
Experts suggest that single-shift schools offer academic and social advantages, evidenced by historically higher pass percentages and qualitative scores compared to double-shift or boys-only evening schools. The government aims to equip single-shift schools with modern facilities and teaching technologies to elevate education standards.
