Delhi Schools Embrace PwDs for Inclusive Training

The Delhi government is launching an initiative to enhance inclusive education by involving Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in training and capacity-building within its schools. This decision stems from a government committee's recommendations aimed at improving the overall school environment for students and educators alike. The process of implementing these accepted recommendations is currently underway.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has directed its District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) to prioritize the inclusion of PwDs in content development, course design, and training delivery. Training materials and methods will adhere to universal design and accessibility principles.
This move aims to formalize the engagement of PwDs, who were previously involved in development and training on an ad hoc basis. The focus is on equity and mainstreaming children with special needs (CWSN) rather than segregation. Additionally, the government plans to increase the number of resource centers for CWSN, adding four new centers to the existing 24.
As of the 2023-24 academic year, Delhi government schools reported a total of 35,887 CWSN across all educational levels, from pre-primary to higher secondary.
