Cook County is expanding its commitment to developing a diverse healthcare workforce by awarding an additional $1 million in scholarships. This funding is directed towards the Provident Scholarship Fund, aimed at supporting local students from underserved communities pursuing health-related professions.
The scholarships provide substantial financial aid, offering $20,000 to graduate students in programs like medicine, dentistry, and nursing, and $10,000 to undergraduates in fields such as nursing and allied health. Since its inception in 2022, the fund has already disbursed $5 million to nearly 300 students.
County Board President Toni Preckwinkle emphasized that the initiative is crucial for creating a healthcare system that offers high-quality, culturally competent care. By supporting students from backgrounds with fewer economic and academic opportunities, the county seeks to ensure its healthcare professionals mirror the diversity of its population.
