Following his own graduation from Winston-Salem State University in December 2022, he has consistently championed HBCUs. His support includes wearing apparel from various HBCU institutions during the NBA's 2020 bubble and creating the docuseries "Why Not Us" with ESPN+ to highlight HBCU athletics.
Further demonstrating his commitment, Paul founded the Chris Paul HBCU Classic, an early-season basketball competition that has since expanded to Atlanta.
