Chennai Buses: 41 New Services for Students
12 Jul
Summary
- 41 special buses will run on 84 routes for students.
- Services aim to reduce overcrowding and ensure safer travel.
- Initiative launched following CM's directions to strengthen public transport.

Beginning Monday, July 13, Chennai's Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will deploy 41 special buses to serve school students. These buses will operate on 84 routes, connecting residential areas to schools and back during peak morning and evening hours.
The primary objective of this expansion is to alleviate overcrowding on regular MTC buses and enhance travel safety and comfort for thousands of students. This initiative aligns with the government's commitment to strengthening public transport facilities for schoolchildren.
The decision followed an extensive 10-day field assessment in areas like Saidapet, where transport officials gathered feedback from students, parents, and school authorities. This study identified overcrowded routes and assessed the need for dedicated student services.
The Tamil Nadu Transport Minister inspected the new buses on Saturday. The MTC plans to monitor passenger demand and may introduce more special buses if required.
