Teacher's Census Trek: From Math Class to Door-to-Door
22 Apr
Summary
- Government teachers conduct the Houselisting Operations for Census 2027.
- The first phase of Census 2027 is underway in eight states.
- Many people are unaware that the Census process has already begun.

Lalit Lal Verma, a 51-year-old mathematics teacher, is engaged in the critical task of Houselisting Operations for Census 2027. This initial phase, running from April to September, involves enumerating buildings and households across the country to ensure precise population data for future planning. Verma, like thousands of his government-employed colleagues, juggles his teaching duties with this demanding fieldwork.
His daily routine involves navigating residential buildings, often after a long day at school, to gather essential information. Verma uses an HLO app on his mobile phone to record details such as family caste, household size, asset ownership, and access to utilities like gas and internet. He diligently notes down contact numbers to resolve any data discrepancies later.
Many citizens remain unaware that the Census process has commenced, leading to initial suspicion or confusion when enumerators like Verma approach their homes. He finds it challenging to connect with residents in government quarters due to their busy schedules, sometimes needing to present official documentation. Notably, Verma observes a societal shift, with people now less likely to recall family phone numbers compared to the 2011 Census.
The Census, originally slated for 2021, was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Currently, the first phase is active in eight states, including Delhi, focusing initially on specific administrative areas. The exercise is set to expand to other parts of the Capital next month.
