CBSE Mandates School Counselors by 2026
26 Mar
Summary
- CBSE requires two distinct counselors for schools starting January 2026.
- New roles include Socio-Emotional Counsellor and Career Counsellor.
- Policy aims for structured mental health support, moving beyond ad hoc measures.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated that all affiliated schools appoint two specific counseling roles starting January 2026. These roles include a Socio-Emotional Counsellor and a Career Counsellor, with a required ratio of one counselor for every 500 students. This represents a significant structural shift, separating mental health support from career guidance.
Socio-emotional counsellors must possess degrees in psychology or social work, or related fields with specialized diplomas. Career counsellors require degrees across various disciplines, focusing on aptitude assessment and career pathways. Both roles necessitate 50 hours of CBSE-approved training, ensuring professional development and structured intervention capabilities.
Experts acknowledge this as a progressive step but raise concerns about the shortage of trained professionals in India. They emphasize the need for expanded training ecosystems to meet the demand. The policy aims to equip schools as the first line of mental health support amidst rising student mental health concerns.
