21 Feb
Summary
- All school staff must receive mandatory mental health training twice annually.
- Schools must organize regular parent sensitization programs on student mental health.
- Extra-curricular activities and revised examination patterns are prioritized.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has mandated that all affiliated schools actively promote mental health and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). This directive, in line with a Supreme Court judgment, requires mandatory training for all teaching, non-teaching, and administrative staff at least twice annually. These sessions, led by certified professionals, will cover psychological first aid, identifying warning signs of distress, and referral mechanisms.
Schools are also directed to organize regular sensitization programs for parents and guardians. These initiatives aim to alleviate undue academic pressure, help recognize signs of psychological distress, and encourage empathetic support. Mental health literacy and life skills education will be integrated into student orientation and curricular activities. The Board emphasizes nurturing emotional resilience alongside intellectual growth.
Further, schools must prioritize extracurricular activities, including sports and arts, and periodically review examination patterns to broaden student identity beyond academic scores. Regular, structured career counseling by qualified professionals will be provided to students and parents, focusing on diverse pathways and informed decisions. Anonymous records of wellness interventions and an annual report on mental health activities are also required.
