California Schools Cut Field Trips: Parents Outraged

Tens of thousands of elementary students in California's Fresno Unified School District will no longer have access to centrally funded field trips. The district has eliminated $2.2 million in enrichment trip funding for students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grade for the upcoming school year.

This decision affects roughly 40,000 students and has ignited anger among parents and educators. Beloved experiences like visits to pumpkin patches, the Big Fresno Fair, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium are now in jeopardy. The cancellation of sixth-grade camp, described as a cherished rite of passage, is particularly upsetting to families.

The Fresno Teachers Association highlighted the issue, prompting a backlash online. While the district states schools can use their own site budgets, teachers warn this could lead to disparities between well-resourced and less-resourced schools. The union plans to meet with families and educators to advocate for reconsideration, pointing to administrative travel expenses as a potential area for savings.
