Sign Language Pioneer Bridged Worlds Through Theatre

Peter Llewellyn-Jones, a leading advocate for deaf accessibility and a pioneer in British Sign Language (BSL), has died at the age of 76. Throughout his multifaceted career as an actor, writer, and interpreter, he dedicated himself to enhancing opportunities for the deaf community. Llewellyn-Jones was instrumental in establishing sign language interpreting as a recognized profession in Britain.

He developed the United Kingdom's first undergraduate degree course in BSL interpreting for the University of Wolverhampton in 1992. His influence extended to British television and theatre, where he introduced and facilitated signed performances. Notably, he worked on over 600 professional theatre productions, including early interpretations for the Royal Shakespeare Company, collaborating with renowned actors.

Llewellyn-Jones also contributed to children's television as an actor and writer, appearing in "Insight" and "The Riddlers." He was among the first interpreters to be featured on-screen in programs like "See Hear!" and interpreted news broadcasts. Alongside academic Robert G Lee, he developed the "role-space" model, an innovative approach to interpreting that emphasized the interpreter's active presence.

His interpreting work spanned significant events, including those for King Charles (then Prince), Diana Princess of Wales, and various political and social settings. He also held positions at the universities of Wolverhampton and Leeds, contributing to curriculum development and postgraduate studies in interpreting. Llewellyn-Jones was the founding chair of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters and served as president of the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters.
